Background of the Study
Flood management has become a critical concern in Ilorin West as recurrent flooding poses threats to life, property, and economic activities (Walker, 2023). The local government’s role in planning, coordinating, and implementing flood control measures is pivotal in mitigating these risks. Rapid urbanization, coupled with climate variability, has overwhelmed traditional drainage systems and infrastructure (Hughes, 2024). The local government has initiated various flood management programs, including early warning systems, infrastructural improvements, and community education. Despite these efforts, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor maintenance, and limited community participation persist (Morgan, 2025). This study examines the effectiveness of local government interventions in flood management, highlighting both the successes and shortcomings of current practices. By analyzing historical flood data, policy responses, and stakeholder engagement, the research aims to develop strategies for improved resilience and disaster preparedness in Ilorin West (Walker, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Ilorin West continues to experience severe flooding despite ongoing government interventions. Insufficient funding, outdated infrastructure, and limited public awareness have hindered effective flood management (Walker, 2023). The current measures have not fully addressed the challenges posed by rapid urbanization and climate change (Hughes, 2024). The resulting damages to property and livelihoods underscore the need for a comprehensive evaluation of local government efforts to determine areas for improvement and enhanced resilience (Morgan, 2025).
